A Lifeline for Learning: Community Libraries in Rural Afghanistan

Supporting Literacy and Education in Badakhshan, Afghanistan

In the remote Badakhshan province of Afghanistan, access to education remains a critical challenge. With a rugged terrain and limited infrastructure, children, especially girls, face significant barriers to obtaining an education.

Business for Better Society (BBS), in collaboration with the locally registered Afghan nonprofit SALEHO, is committed to breaking these barriers by supporting community libraries that provide essential learning resources to children and adults alike.

The Literacy Crisis in Badakhshan

Literacy rates in Afghanistan, particularly in rural regions like Badakhshan, are among the lowest in the world. According to UNESCO, the overall literacy rate in Afghanistan stands at approximately 37%, with female literacy significantly lower due to years of instability and restrictive policies. In Badakhshan, where poverty levels are high and educational facilities are scarce, many children grow up without access to books, qualified teachers, or structured learning environments.

Libraries as a Lifeline for Girls’ Education

For many girls in Badakhshan, libraries provide a rare and essential opportunity to continue their education. With restrictions limiting their access to formal schooling, these libraries serve as safe spaces where girls can explore knowledge, build literacy skills, and engage in self-directed learning. Access to books and educational materials empowers girls to dream beyond societal limitations and gain the confidence needed to shape their own futures.

The Role of Community Libraries

Recognizing the urgent need for educational support, BBS and SALEHO have established and continue to maintain community libraries in Badakhshan. These libraries are more than just book-lending spaces; they serve as safe havens for learning, cultural exchange, and empowerment. They provide:

  • Access to Books and Learning Materials – From textbooks to storybooks, our libraries stock a diverse range of materials that cater to different age groups and literacy levels.
  • Support for Girls’ Education – With many girls unable to attend formal schools, libraries offer an alternative space where they can continue learning.
  • Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning – These libraries are hubs where children and adults alike can gather, read, and participate in educational activities.
  • A Pathway to Hope – By fostering literacy and a love for learning, these libraries equip individuals with the tools they need to build better futures for themselves and their communities.
