Business for Better Society is pleased to work with Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan) and to call them our partners and friends. The message below was written by CW4WAfghan and is copied here with their permission.
Message from Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan
Alongside all of you, we have observed the swiftly unfolding events in Afghanistan with horror, disbelief and a growing concern for the security of women and girls, as well as the preservation of rights and freedoms of all Afghans. At this time, nearly all of Afghanistan, including Kabul, is now under Taliban control.
Although we are not able to respond to every message at this time, we are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support and solidarity from our membership during this difficult time. We draw strength from your words of kindness, and we share in the anguish you have expressed. Like you, we know that this solidarity is needed now more than ever, and we are firm in our commitment to stand with the people of Afghanistan.
Right now, our staff in Canada are working around the clock to ensure the security of vulnerable groups in Afghanistan, and supporting their safe departure from the country. We are also planning a response to the heightened humanitarian crisis with the influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who arrived in Kabul prior to the Taliban capture of the city. Many thousands of people are without adequate shelter and basic needs, including women and children who are disproportionately represented among the IDPs. Watch for an update on this, and more information on how we are addressing this need, in the coming days.
We know many of you have questions and fears about what the future holds for the brave and resilient people of Afghanistan. What we can say at this point is that CW4WAfghan remains absolutely committed to its mission. We never imagined working under Taliban rule a second time, but we have existed as an organization during such conditions before. Once again, we will find a way to make a difference in the lives of women and girls, and to continue speaking out in defense of human rights, access to quality education, and peace for all Afghans.
