There’s something truly magical about witnessing someone experience something new for the very first time.
One of the most delightful firsts was introducing the students to the joy of good old-fashioned board games. In an age dominated by video games and digital entertainment, it was refreshing to see the excitement on their faces as they dove into games like Scrabble, Rummikub, Uno, Jenga, and Snakes and Ladders. Board games offer more than just entertainment; they foster camaraderie, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. And of course, no game is complete without the ever-present “supervisors” offering their unsolicited advice!
But the journey of firsts didn’t end there. For the students who remained at the school over the Easter break, BBS hosted a special evening – a pizza night at Villa Katwe in Masaka. For the students, it was their first encounter with this beloved Italian dish. The excitement and curiosity they displayed as they watched their pizzas being crafted and baked in the traditional pizza oven was truly infectious. And when it came time to taste the creations, the unanimous verdict was two thumbs up! The ensuing silence as they savoured their ice cream sundaes spoke volumes about the sheer bliss of the moment.
Food, as we all know, is a powerful vehicle for cultural exchange. Through the simple act of enjoying pizza, we were able to initiate conversations about Italy – its culinary traditions, and its vibrant culture. It was a delightful introduction to a world far beyond their own, opening their minds to new possibilities and perspectives.
As I reflect on these experiences, I am reminded of the profound impact that firsts have on our lives. Whether it’s discovering the joy of board games or savouring a new culinary delight, each first represents a gateway to learning, growth, and connection.
For me, personally, witnessing the students’ excitement as they delved into the world of board games and explored the flavours of Italy was a first in itself—an experience that I will cherish forever.
In closing, let us embrace every opportunity to experience firsts – both big and small – for they are the building blocks of a life richly lived. And may we continue to foster learning, joy, and cultural exchange in all our endeavours, knowing that the journey of discovery is never-ending.
