Business for Better Society is proud to have collaborated with Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan) on a transformative adult literacy program in six villages in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan.

On October 26, 2023, Lauryn Oates, the Executive Director of CW4WAfghan, testified before the Canadian Government Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. During her presentation, she passionately emphasized that the dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is intricately linked to the country’s human rights challenges and the pervasive system of gender apartheid.
Ms. Oates compellingly stated, “It’s well established that tragedies impacting significant numbers of people are often less likely to draw empathy because we can’t easily see the human story behind the statistics. But I ask you for a moment to try to see it.” She shared poignant stories, such as the 10-year-old forced into marriage or the 16-year-old contemplating suicide due to the lack of educational opportunities. Ms. Oates urged the committee to understand the human faces behind the statistics and emphasized the need for concerted action.
These stories are not just statistics; they represent the lives of real people facing unimaginable challenges. CW4WAfghan and its partners, including Business for Better Society, are united in their commitment to creating positive change in Afghanistan. The dire situation demands collective action and ongoing support.
