As of March 2025, the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues to face significant challenges. Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, remains a critical hotspot of regional instability. The conflict between various armed groups, including the persistent M23 rebel movement, continues to impact local communities. Despite a series of international diplomatic efforts, the region still experiences violence and displacement.

Despite these immense challenges, the spirit of the local population remains unbroken. In the face of ongoing conflict, economic hardship, and humanitarian challenges, volunteers of Remember Youth for Change are writing a powerful narrative of resilience.

Planting Hope in Difficult Terrain

The Goma region has long been characterised by its struggles – ongoing conflicts, economic instability, and a growing humanitarian crisis that would break the spirit of many. Yet, these extraordinary women refuse to be defined by their circumstances. Recently, they came together in an act of profound hope and resistance, planting sweet potatoes and beans across their community.

This isn’t just about agriculture. It’s a bold collective declaration that life persists even in the most challenging conditions. Each carefully planted seed represents more than a potential harvest; it symbolises hope, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to community survival.

Beyond Survival: A Message of Empowerment

In a region where basic needs have become increasingly difficult to secure, these women are demonstrating the transformative power of collective action. Their agricultural efforts do more than provide food – they rebuild community bonds, restore dignity, and create a pathway of hope for families struggling to endure.

Their actions remind us that hope is not a passive emotion, but an active choice. In planting these crops, these women are:

  • Ensuring food security for their families
  • Rebuilding community infrastructure
  • Demonstrating incredible emotional and physical resilience
  • Creating economic opportunities in a challenging environment

As the seeds take root, they symbolise the potential for renewal, the power of community, and the incredible strength of women who refuse to be defeated by circumstances.

The story of Goma is not just a story of survival. It’s a testament to the incredible power of hope, community, and human resilience. These women are not just planting crops; they are planting the future.
