Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2020!

Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC), shared this collage of the 30 girls that graduated from their undergraduate programs at universities in China and around the world.

EGRC currently has 140 girls attending university and the 30 incredible young women pictured here graduated during the most difficult of times.  Like so many around the world, their last semester was spent at home, participating in on-line classes and attending a virtual graduation ceremony.  While many are now working in their chosen fields, several have decided to continue their studies and have been accepted into Masters level programs.

EGRC is a Canadian organisation that sponsors the education of girls at a high school and university level.  To date, EGRC has provided the gift of education to 1,280 girls from the poorest regions of rural China and the girls have achieved a graduation rate of over 99%.

The Chinese province that EGRC works in is the Gansu province.  Many have asked where is Gansu? Gansu, located in Northwest China,  is a landlocked province where 73% of the population is rural.  The incidence of poverty in Gansu is the second highest in China. with 7.9% of the country’s total poor.

EGRC’s work continues through the COVID-19 crisis with innovative fundraising such as on-line art auction and so that even more girls can continue their education and help raise themselves and their families out of poverty.

Congratulations again the Class of 2020 and we look forward to hearing more as they start the next chapter in their lives.
