Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC) recently shared a collage celebrating the 30 remarkable young women who graduated from undergraduate programs in China and around the world.
These graduates achieved this milestone during unprecedented times. Like students globally, their final semester was spent at home, attending online classes and participating in a virtual graduation ceremony. While many have begun working in their chosen fields, several have decided to continue their studies and have been accepted into Master’s programs.
EGRC, a Canadian organization, sponsors the education of girls at both high school and university levels. To date, they have supported 1,280 girls from some of China’s poorest regions, achieving a graduation rate of over 99%.
The province where EGRC focuses its work is Gansu, located in Northwest China. Gansu is a largely rural, landlocked province where 73% of the population lives in rural areas, and it has the second-highest poverty rate in China, accounting for 7.9% of the country’s total poor.
Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, EGRC continues its mission through innovative fundraising, including online art auctions, ensuring that even more girls can pursue their education and create opportunities for themselves and their families.
Congratulations once again to the Class of 2020! We look forward to seeing all that these inspiring young women will achieve in the next chapter of their lives.
