Céline Cousteau’s documentary, Tribes on the Edge, has become the catalyst for The Javari Project, a multifaceted campaign dedicated to supporting indigenous communities in the Brazilian Amazon.
As part of the project, Céline and her team traveled to Atalaia-do-Norte in November 2019, a town bordering the indigenous territory of Vale do Javari. During their visit, they:
- Screened Tribes on the Edge for both the indigenous communities and local schools;
- Met with indigenous and local leaders to discuss strategies and assess ways to implement the Javari Project;
- Delivered and trained FUNAI government staff to use DJI Mavic Pro drones for short-range surveillance to monitor illegal activities.
Funding for the drones came from donations collected during a film screening in Victoria, BC, and through the GlobalGiving platform, ensuring that the project could support the communities directly and sustainably.
Through these efforts, Tribes on the Edge has grown beyond a documentary into an impactful initiative, empowering indigenous communities to protect their land and culture.
