In a country facing numerous challenges, Afghanistan’s community libraries stand as symbols of hope and resilience. Business for Better Society is proud of these vital institutions that continue to serve their communities despite difficult circumstances. Today, we’d like to share some inspiring data from our library projects in Zebak and Ishkashim, revealing the remarkable story of how Afghans continue to embrace education and literacy.
Zebak Public Library: A Growing Community Hub
The Zebak Public Library has shown impressive growth over the past year. In 2023, the library served a total of 1,933 visitors, with women making up the majority at 1,205 visitors (62%). This strong female participation is particularly encouraging given the current limitations on women’s education in the country.
In 2024, the library continued to thrive, serving 1,927 visitors through December. Interestingly, we observed a shift in demographics, with male visitors (1,270) outnumbering female visitors (657). Despite these changing patterns, the overall attendance remains strong, demonstrating the community’s unwavering commitment to learning.
The data reveals fascinating seasonal patterns as well. In 2023, the highest attendance was recorded in October and November, while in 2024, the peak months shifted to January through May. These patterns likely reflect local conditions and community needs, showing how the library adapts to serve its patrons throughout the year.
Ishkashim Women’s Library: A Safe Space for Learning
A newer initiative, the Ishkashim Women’s Library, has shown tremendous promise since its opening in June 2024. In just seven months of operation, this specialized facility welcomed 1,319 visitors. What’s particularly noteworthy is that despite its name focusing on women, the library has become a resource for the entire community, with 446 male visitors (34%) alongside 873 female visitors (66%).
September and October were particularly active months for this library, with over 200 visitors each month. This strong community response underscores the vital role that dedicated learning spaces play in Afghanistan’s communities.
Female Prison Library: Small But Significant
Perhaps our most specialized initiative is the small library established within a female prison. Though the numbers are modest—just 51 visits recorded from July through December 2024—the impact is profound. This library represents our belief that education and access to books should be available to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
The steady visitation numbers, peaking at 11 visits in September and November, demonstrate how even in the most challenging settings, the desire for knowledge remains strong.
Supporting These Libraries in 2025
In a time when educational opportunities face significant constraints, these community spaces provide crucial access to knowledge, imagination, and connection.
With your help, we can:
- Expand the collections with new books and educational materials in local languages
- Ensure fair compensation for the dedicated local librarians
- Maintain safe, welcoming facilities with necessary utilities and repairs
- Extend outreach to more remote communities through mobile library services
Every donation, regardless of size, helps secure these libraries’ operations throughout the coming year. By supporting these libraries now, you’re investing in Afghanistan’s future—ensuring that thousands of people continue to have access to education despite the challenging circumstances.
