Business for Better Society (BBS) and Remember Youth for Change (RYC) are proud to announce the launch of “Threads of Transformation,” an innovative project that weaves together history, culture, and entrepreneurship to empower youth that have been impacted by the ongoing conflict in the eastern DR Congo.

Reimagining Futures Through Fashion

This groundbreaking initiative will work with RYC’s tailoring program graduates to decommission and repurpose garments of historical significance. Participants will not only acquire valuable design skills but also redefine their past and craft a new narrative for their future.

A Unique Collaboration

Led by London-based designer Saskia Lenaerts, who has worked with iconic labels such as Burberry and Alexander McQueen, the project aims to refine students’ abilities and empower them to become local artisans. Ms. Lenaerts, an instructor at Kingston School of Art’s Fashion program, believes that “fashion plays a significant role in breaking down stigma and generating acceptance”.

Key Project Components

  • Skill Development: Students will engage in creative and practical activities to enhance their existing skillsets, learning about the design process, sketching, and garment repurposing.
  • Design and Creation: Participants will reimagine and transform garments, fine-tuning their technical skills in deconstructing, cutting, and stitching.
  • Sustainable Impact: The created garments will be sold to support the launch of students’ businesses and reinvested in Remember Youth for Change’s on-going programs.

Accompanying Visual Project

A unique visual initiative capturing the project’s journey will be produced under the direction of acclaimed filmmaker Ms. Vitoria de Mello Franco. Known for her powerful storytelling and visual artistry, de Mello Franco will bring her unique perspective to showcase the transformative experiences of the participants.

“This program embodies our commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions that empower communities and drive positive change,” said Kelly Brantner, CEO of Business for Better Society. “By combining fashion, entrepreneurship, and storytelling, we’re not only providing valuable skills to youth affected by conflict but also creating a platform for them to rewrite their narratives. This initiative exemplifies our belief that business can be a powerful force for good, and we’re excited to see the transformative impact it will have on these young artisans and their communities.”
