As the CEO of Business for Better Society, I want to address the recent devastating floods in Kenya by first saying that our hearts go out to the affected communities, and those who have lost their loved ones and livelihoods.
The last week of March marked the start of the long rains season in Kenya, characterized by isolated heavy storms that caused heavy rainfall and flash floods in several parts of the country. At least 13 people have tragically lost their lives, nearly 3,000 households have been displaced, over 339 livestock killed, and unknown acres of croplands lost due to flooding. Areas of particular concern include Marsabit, Turkana, Tana River, Garissa, Kirinyaga, Muranga, Kiambu, Meru, Kisumu, Nairobi, and Kitui counties.
Homa Bay county is home to the BBS Activate Action microbusiness incubator for women. Despite the challenges posed by the floods, I am relieved to report that there has been no loss of life among our program participants. However, many of our women-owned businesses have been impacted, especially in the Nyalkinyi Estate region.
In April 2023, I had the privilege of visiting Homa Bay county along with Business for Better Society advisor, Suzi Roberts. We witnessed firsthand the resilience of the women in this program as they navigated the journey of new business owers. The determination and spirit they possess to forge better futures, not just for themselves but also for their families, will serve them through this challenging period. Their unwavering resolve serves as a source of inspiration, motivating us to persist in our mission of empowering women entrepreneurs, both locally and globally, and breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
The situation remains critical, and your support is invaluable. Let’s come together to uplift those affected by this natural disaster. By contributing to the BBS microbusiness page, your donation will directly benefit the women in Homa Bay most impacted by the floods. Every donation matters, and together, we can help these women restore their businesses, livelihoods, and hope.

Thank you for being part of our community and for standing with us during these challenging times.
Warm regards,
Kelly Brantner
